Your "Osama Bin Laden Is Dead" Themed End of the Week (05/01/11- 05/07/11)

(Couldn't have said it any better myself)

END OF THE WEEK:

First of all, let's just get this right out of the way...

People of the Week: The Navy SEALS "Team Six"

No one outside of the actual individ
uals, the United States military and federal government know the identities of these six brave U.S. military soldiers who finally ended the trillion dollar mission to find and capture the FBI's #1 most wanted terrorist, although I assume the photo (courtesy of Funny Junk) is an accurate portrayal of those troops. Anyways, whoever these individuals are, they did something this past Sunday evening that no other soldiers have ever done in U.S. history, which is killing bin Laden. And for that, they deserve our sincerest congrats, acclaim, and favors, even though they most likely consider it as a simple job well done.

Now, that that's over with, here are some of the other best and most memorable people and moments from this past week that, whether you like it
or not, is probably going to involve any (if not all) major things related to the death of bin Laden. After all, the moment in history was roughly ten years in the making. Also, rarely does such an event make this entire nation united in a sense of joy and relief, even provoking several individuals to run towards both the White House and Ground Zero to celebrate the news like this one did. Let's begin...

Story of the Week: Al-Qaeda Leader Osama Bin Laden Killed By Gunshot to Left Eye From a Team Of Six U.S. Navy Seals in Pakistan; Gets Dead Body Dumped at Sea
Yes, folks, you read it right. After nearly ten years and over trillion dollars spent finding him while also fighting the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan, Osama bin Laden (a.k.a. the greatest hide and seek player ever) was killed in a U.S. military operations that involved everything from Black Hawk helicopters to highly trained soldiers (and only two days before retirement, too!). What does this news hold towards the future is something that not many people are certain of. Is the War on Terror over? What does this mean for the future of the war in Afghanistan? How long before some kind of Al-Qaeda counter-attack? What we do know for
sure is that the most wanted man in America is gone, no longer able to harm us in any way, and that's really all that matters for now.

Photo of the Week: Barack Obama and His Cabinet Watching "Operation Geronimo" In the Situation Room

Now that is some "Sold
ier kissing lady in Times Square on V-J Day" quality epicness. The photo shows so little, yet reveals so much. Outstanding.

Announcement of the Week: WWE Wrestler John Cena Announcing the Death of Bin Laden
Only thing that could've made this better woul
d be the powerful voice of Jim Ross reacting to the news.

"Twitterer" of the Week: Sohaib Athar, an IT consultant living in Abbottabad Cantt, Pakistan, who this past Sunday unknowingly tweeted the Osama Bin Laden death and compound raid until he heard that news officially broke of what went on. In an event that broke the record of highest sustained rate of tweets ever with 3,440 per second, its safe to say that he was the one who stood out among all else (and, well, Rashad Mendenhall, but only for his stupidity).

Karmic Interruption of the Week: NBC Interrupting an Episode of "Celebrity Apprentice" for President Obama's Bin Laden Speech
Obama will probably have you believe that this interruption was just coincidence...but how can it be? For starters, "Operation Geronimo" had been completed hours beforehand, so its not like he could've announced Bin Laden's death sooner. Second, the speech actually came a full hour after NBC News interrupted the episode and the news had been made public. I don't know about you, but I have a good feeling that when Obama was asked what time the White House will announce that he will give his planned (and surprising) speech, he said between the hours of 9 p.m. and 11 p.m./ET without hesitation.

Suspenseful Moment of the Week: The time between the announcement that President Obama was going to make the speech to the moment tha
t news broke of Bin Laden's death. I was at a dinner party celebrating a couple's 50th wedding anniversary at the time that this took place, so I wasn't able to expeience this sense of confusion among news sites across TV land, but I'd imagine that it was tense.

Internet Photoshop of the Week: I think its safe to say that the Internet pretty much killed this week with their reaction to the news of Bin Laden's death. From a Keyboard Cat video and the long-anticipated Taiwanese animation re-enactment to the inevitable return of the Hitler "Downfall" parody following the studio taking down all previous ones online (plus these great photoshops and .gifs), the Web sure had a great spark of inspiration from the story. But for me, the one that stood out the most above all was this photoshop, created and spread across the world mere hours after it happened. Simple, clear cut and nothing short of hilarious.

Party Poopers of the Week:
People Who Questioned U.S. Celebration of Bin Laden's Death
Come on, you guys! You couldn't even give us this one day to act all unified and happy as a whole without questioning the morality and possible hypocrisy of it all?!?! The gall! In all seriousness, the question of whether the celebration of Bin Laden's death in the U.S. was the same as, say, Middle Easterners celebrating 9/11 after it happened are, well, not even close. One side had people celebrating the death of thousands of innocent civilians while the other had people celebrating the death of the person responsible for the killing of those thousands of innocent civilians. Besides, I know there are some who have used their Christian faith and the teachings of Jesus behind these thoughts...but, come on, death and Christianity have been hand and hand since its very founding. That is all I'm going to say about the matter. Moving on...

Video of the Week:
"President Obama at the 2011 White House Correspondents Dinner"
Funny, and he did this as Operation Geronimo was going into effect, too! If I didn't know any better, I'd say that he's just as cool as many people made him out to be in the '08 election.

Loser of the Week: The Pakistani government
Boy, that had to be embarrassing. To basically state for years that Osama Bin Laden was NOT hiding in their country, I repeat NOT hiding in their country AT ALL, only to have news released that the leader of Al Qaeda WAS, in fact, hiding in Pakistan...in a $1,000,000 mansion/secret lair with barb wires and no Internet that was the biggest in its neighborhood...for the past five years...near the capital city of Islamabad...half a mile away from the Pakistani version of the Oval Office two of the country's military bases. I'm not entirely sure how the phone call between Obama and Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari took place, but I'm pretty sure that it was chocked full of Funnybot level awkwardness from the Pakistani side, kind of like the majority of the humor in the "American Pie" movies.

U.S. President of the Week: Barack Obama
for not only ordering and executing the dangerous mission to kill Osama Bin Laden that proved to be a success, but for also keeping the best damn poker face in public as the mission was playing out, not only appearing at last Saturday's White House correspondence dinner (shown above) and laughing at Seth Myer's Bin Laden joke, but even going as far as playing 1/2 a round of golf the next morning. Now that is some Josh Holloway as the Black Rider on "Community" (what a great episode that was!) level coolness. Great job, Mr. President. Unfortunately, you're still half-black, so you have a long way to go before the majority of white America thinks you're the right man to vote in 2012 (despite all that happened on Sunday).

And that's the way it was! Once again, apologies if you felt I spent too much on the Bin Laden story then, say, Fey and Poehler on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, " the two no-hitters by Francisco Liriano and Justin Verlander respectively, or the scandalous photos of Kate Middleton's story. Actually, you know what? I'm not gonna apologize. This story was the biggest of the week by a mile, with its several different plots and reactions, that nothing comes close, so there. Now, enjoy the rest of your weekend, why don't ya!
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
