Random Thoughts: 07/25/11- 08/01/11

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

The final inductee into the 2011 The mj15 Blog Hall of Fame class will be announced later on today. In the meantime, here is this week's random thoughts to keep you distracted. The following were on my mind between Monday, July 25th and Monday, August 1st:

- What a fantastic week it was for TV comedies! First, "Curb Your Enthusiasm" airs their episode "Palestinian Chicken" on Sunday, a wonderful instant classic for the show that saw plot points that were all executed very well, the birth of three more memorable 'Curb' phrases like "social assassin,"
among other things. Then, on Thursday, FX aired the "Louie" episode "Subway/Pamela," one of the show's best in their short amount of time with hilarious moments like Louie cleaning up the random liquid on the subway seat in black and white and capped off by that moving and painful speech by Louis C.K. in which he expressed his love to his friend, Pamela. Sure, shows like "Parks and Recreations," "Community" and "Archer" are on hiatus and won't come back until the fall, but at least I know that we have these two comedic geniuses to continue churning out more episodes of their respective shows for the remainder of the summer.

- I have thoroughly enjoyed this MTV 30 celebration on VH1 classic this past weekend. As someone who is not a Generation Xer and who has not lived in the days where the network was all about the music, 24/7, it gave me a great idea of its former greatness, before its devolution some 15 or so years ago. Also, some of the things they have shown have been great, like the "Unplugged" performances or Cobain and Clapton, the 1993 Rock & Roll Inaugural Ball moment where the Clintons came onto the stage to thank the young people for voting for helping Bill win the election (it kind of resembled the feeling of joy and a bright future ahead that occurred the day that Obama got inaugurated two years ago), Ice-T explaining what this rap thing is to a 1980s white audience, the network ad promos with Steve Buscemi and Dennis Leary, and more. Such a shame, though, that this was on VH1 Classic and not on, you know, the actual MTV. But hey, if you have a choice between showing the channel's best moments of the past 30 years, or 24 hour re-runs of "Jersey Shore," you gotta choose the latter, am I right?

- So, all that argument on Capital Hill and this is what came out of the debt ceiling battle, something that is similar to the Boehner bill but without the balanced budget amendment? Does Obama even have balls anymore? (sighs)

- Hey, Peter King! The NFL lockout is over, and we're into the league's most frenzied free agency period ever! What do you feel like talking about?
"Weird Austria fact: Hitler was born there. Never knew that."
Umm, okay. What else?
"This gem came from Andrew Goldman’s interview with Judge Judy in the June 26 New York Times Sunday magazine. Judge Judy works five days per month … and makes $45 million a year."
I hate you.

- Sources must be a pretty big insider if he can tell ESPN where Carlos Beltran, Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb, Matt Hasselback, DeAngelo Williams, Nnamdi Asomugha, Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress are all going.

- Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! Damn! (http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/6819477/colorado-rockies-ubaldo-jimenez-confirms-trade-cleveland-indians-prospects) Oh well, it wasn't like the White Sox were ever going to come back and win the division anyways. Not with the .162 hitting Adam Dun being place 4th in the lineup every night.

More random thoughts to come next Monday! Until then, enjoy the start of your workweek.
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
