RANDOM THOUGHTS:
No preamble this week. I'm just gonna go straight to it. The following were on my mind between Monday, April 19th and Monday, April 26th:
- It's back! Time now for the usual bi-monthly ranking of my favorite show, otherwise known as the TV top ten:
10. "The Simpsons" (tie) (still #10)
10. "Chuck" (tie)
9. ESPN's "30 for 30" (position previously held by "30 Rock")
8. "Community" (still #8)
7. "American Dad" (down from #5, position previously held by "Fringe")
6. "The Office" (down from #2, position previously held by "Modern Family")
5. "South Park" (down from #3, position previously held by "American Dad")
4. "The Pacific" (position previously held by "Parks and Recreations")
3. "Breaking Bad" (position previously held by "South Park")
2. "Parks and Recreations" (up from #2, position previously held by "The Office")
1. "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" (still #1)
Up from last list (March 2010): "The Pacific," "30 for 30," "Breaking Bad," "Parks and Recreations," "Chuck"
Down from last list (March 2010): "30 Rock," "Modern Family," "Fringe," "South Park," "The Office," "American Dad"
New from last list (March 2010): "Chuck," "30 for 30," "Breaking Bad," "The Pacific"
Just Barely Missed List: "30 Rock," "Treme," "Modern Family," "Modern Family," "House," "The Colbert Report," "The Life and Times of Tim"
Some notes on the list and future lists:
a. Very disappointing showings for "The Office" and "Modern Family." While shows like "Parks and Recreations," and "South Park" put on their best showing and with shows like "The Pacific," "30 for 30" (my vote for the year's best documentary series), and "Breaking Bad" premiered with fantastic results, the two didn't show didn't step up themselves.
b. Too early for me to put "Treme" on the list. But, I do have a good feeling that it will appear on the next list.
c. Haven't caught up with "Fringe" since they came back from their two month hiatus, which is why I put them off the list.
d. Why is "The Pacific," a newcomer, such high rated on my list? Well, the last three episodes had a lot to do with it, not to mention the $250 million that was well spent to make it, the great acting, and much more.
e. Overall, this was the toughest list I had to make. So many good shows premiering the past eight weeks, it's incredible. (sigh) if only the summers were as good.
f. Shows I didn't watch the past two months: "Fringe" (as mentioned), "Damages," "Justified," "Human Target," "Lost" (never did and probably never will until the series finale (I did this with other supposedly great/famous shows I never watched like "The Sopranos" blackout ending, "Friends," and "Will and Grace")).
g. I'm thinking late May/ early June for my next list. Set your calendars accordingly!
- If there is anyone who feels that the NL is better than the AL, consider these two comparisons:
Javier Vasquez last year with Atlanta (NL)
15 wins, 2.87 ERA, 238 Ks
Javier Vasquez through four starts with New York (AL)
1 win, 8.27 ERA, 15 Ks
Carlos Silva last year with Seattle (AL)
1 win, 8.60 ERA, 10 Ks
Carlos Silva through three starts with Chicago (NL)
2 wins, 0.95 ERA, 12 Ks
- First, it was the stoner "holiday" 420 on Tuesday. Then, it was Earth Day on Thursday. Geez, I guess last week really was Earth Day!
/knows joke is bad
/leaves room in disgust to self
- Last week, I was offered to send Roy Halladay (who is off to a crazy good start) for CC Sabbathia (okay, but not Halladay great) and I accidentally clicked "Accept Trade" instead of "Decline Trade." Now, I've lost my best pitcher and probably the best pitcher in baseball in a bonehead mistake. In other words, I am an idiot. On the bright side, I am currently first place in that league. So it's not so bad...right?
- First the bad climate to live in, then the hard to pronounce cities and geographical territories followed by Bjorn Borg, the economy going bankrupt, one of the volcanoes exploding and trapping all of Europe's airplanes, and now this. It is official: Iceland sucks.
- Possible reason Drew Brees agreed to be on the cover of Madden NFL '11:
a. he's sacrificing himself to the "Madden jinx" so other players don't have to.
b. he was begged to accept it, so he did, but only if the monry he receives went to Chris Johnson who really deserved it more than him.
c. Madden agreed to rename it "Madden NFL 1 A.D." since all of the previous coverees came before the Breesus. (Note: thanks to the commentors of KSK for that)
d. He was fullfilling a promise to Timmy Thomas (who was diagnosed with Timmy Thomas disease two falls ago) this past August to have an MVP caliber year. win a Super Bowl and appear at the cover at the same time.
e. Cause he's Drew f-in Brees, dude!
And with that stroke of the index finger ends another edition of "Random Thoughts." Be sure to come back for a new edition next Monday! Until then, it's time for another edtion of the "Zep-tastic Song of the Week." This week comes what many people call one of the band's best. It needs no introduction. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: "Achilles Last Stand":
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15

End of the Week: 04/18/10- 04/24/10
END OF THE WEEK:
Well, there goes another seven days. It was pretty quick, yes, but it did leave a few marks. Iceland volcano aside, we had the NFL once again proving itself to be the king of American sports, "South Park" and Comedy Central backing down to like, four Muslim extremists, and much more miscellaneous things. The following are my picks for some of the week's best:
Picture of the Week: Sheep Pig

The following are my picks for some of the week's best:
Picture of the Week: Sheep Pig
Peep? Shig? Whatever you call it (and according to Yahoo!, it's called a magalista, an animal closely related to the boar), it is indeed a pig with sheep-like wool and quite frankly...it's pretty weird.
Eight inning, Fordham vs. Iona in a regular season baseball game. After scoring the eight run of the inning completing the improbable eight run comeback, the Rams have bases loaded with Chris Walker at the plate. Walker ends up hitting a good base hit to center scoring the man on third, Matt DeSilva, and the man on second, Stephen McSherry, easily. Now, with the score tied, Brad Kownacki, who was at first before the hit by Walker, is waved only to not only score Fordham the eighth run in the inning, but to also give Fordham the 12-9 lead. What happens next makes you want to say both "Did he really just do that?" followed by a "How did he do that?":
Spectacular. It's amazing that even more athletic and talented players like those in the MLB do more often. It's always the minor leaguers or college boys. Still, though, it was a spectacular play by Kownacki and one that will be associated with him for the rest of his life.
Story of the Week (meaning both the Actual Story of the Week and the Tiger Woods Saga of '09 Memorial Story of the Week): Comedy Central Censor "201" Episode of "South Park" After Warning From Muslim Extremists
I was going to write something like three paragraphs about this. But then I'd figure that since (spoiler alert) this will be my award for "Controversy of the Month" on "End of the Month" later this week, I might as well save it for then. Until then, I hope you enjoy these 2200 related articles about this topic that features the response by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Comedy Central not showing it since, and more.
Person of the Week: The NFL
What if I told you that the biggest events in the sports calendar this week came from a sport that isn't even playing it's season right now? Well, that's what happened this week as the National Football League, still four and a half months away from the start of their newest season, took center stage as the main topic of conversation. The NHL Playoffs? Not a chance! Instead, let's take the time to discuss the college players our favorite team picked in this year's NFL draft, even though only 10% of them won't be complete busts by year three, and the trades they made during it.
What about the NBA Playoffs? No way, man, not when I just got the news that Steelers QB Ben Roethlesberger has been suspended for six games for violating the NFL's conduct policy and might also be traded! OK, well the MLB? Or what about NCAA just signing a new TV deal for the tournament with both CBS and Turner Sports and expanding the amount of teams to 68 games? Screw that! Instead, let's look at the released schedule for the upcoming season and already predict which teams will finish where in the standings and who has the easiest/toughest road to the playoffs!
The point is, the biggest things the NFL had this week was the releasing of their schedule and a player draft, and they managed to have it covered more than any other big sports story this past week. I mean, even the schedule release had a two hour special edition of SportsCenter on Tuesday! And that, my friends, is the definition of success!
And that's the way it is! See you next Saturday with another edition of "End of the Week." Enjoy the rest of your weekend, everyone!
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15

NFL Offseason Check-Up: The 2010 Draft
Tonight is quite a night to be a sports fan. For me, a Chicago sports fan, this is probably the most packed evening in recent memory as both the Bulls AND Blackhawks play their respective playoff games as well as mediocre Cubs and White Sox baseball on the side. But that's not all! For those that are just sports fans in general, there's also three other NHL playoff game, two other NBA playoff games not a sports fan? There's the comedies on NBC, "Fringe," "The Mentalist," the medical soaps on ABC, a repeat of last night's "South Park" (if Comedy Central doesn't wuss out of replaying it after not repeating it last night at 11) and much more. Basically, if you own a TV tonight, you will be rewarded.
But you know what? F@&%. THOSE. S#%@$. Why? Because for the first time ever, the NFL Draft, the time of the year where all of the teams in the league chooses which available former college players they want on their team, will be broadcasted tonight. In PRIIIIMEEETIIIIMEEE! And you know what, it's alright with me.
After all, it takes ten minutes to make a team pick, so it's not like you have to spend the entire evening watching ESPN's terrible coverage of it. It's the most important day of the NFL offseason, so people will tune it despite the other options they have tonight. Finally, who cares about the NHL and NBA palyoffs? Unless your team is playing a playoff game tonight, it's not must see TV since, you know, it's only the FIRST ROUND of the NHL/NBA playoffs, and it's only game threes in most of the series playing today. You only get one day to find out who your team selects in the first round.
Finally, if it's such a bad idea for the NFL to promote the first round of the draft on Thursday nights, then why does it seem like coverage of it is bigger than ever. I mean, NFL Network had a six hour and twenty five minute pregame show before this whole thing began. More publications and Internet sites seem to have made more mock drafts then ever before. ESPN, bless their hearts, started their coverage of the draft since 9 a.m./ET. So, it's sort of like this made the speculation bigger.
That's really all I have to say in this. I thought of doing a mock draft, but I decided not to. It's not because that I don't want to, but because I only know, like, fifteen people where in previous years I would know at least forty. But while I'm still here, I do believe that this draft will conclude with:
1. Sam Bradford to St. Louis
2. Ndamukong Suh to Detroit
3. Gerald McCoy to Tampa Bay
4. Washington trades down for a OT in the middle of the first round
5. Eric Berry to Cleveland
6. Jimmy Claufsen to the Bills
7. Ben Roethlesberger stays in Pittsburgh, but the Steelers will draft a QB eitherway
8. Tim Tebow will be taken in the late first round
9. Dez Bryant will go to Seattle
10. I kind of mentioned this earlier, but I'll repeat: NFL Network's coverage will surpass ESPN by a mile
11. Jets fans, despite their busy offseason already, will still have their pick booed by the fans
So does the NFL look arrogant for doing this? Yes. But fans of the NFL will watch eitherway, so that's that. So enjoy the draft, and I'll see you with my offseason recap the week before the Hall of Fame game.
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
UPDATE (04/23): Now that the first round is over, I've thought of another reason: seeing players that were supposed to be selected as a high draft pick not being picked in the first round at all and having a day to take that dissapointment in, not a few hours. I'm thinking of you, Jimmy Claussen!

I Write Half Baked Rambling, You Read It: Volume LXVII
(Note: I may have to check back at that number, but it sounds about right)
Happy Monday evening. I hope you're having a relaxing evening as I am right now. Just watching game 2 of the Bulls/Cavaliers playoff series and I am quite enjoying and surprised at how decent Chicago has played tonight. 52-50 lead for Cleveland as I write. Hopefully they can keep this close to the end and win this, just to make the unpreventable series loss seem less embarrassing...hopefully.
Anyways, onto the RTs. The following went inside my brain between Monday, April 12th and Monday, April 19th:
- Laugh all you want about KFC's Double Down. But when it becomes the restaurant's highest selling product of 2010 like the KFC Famous Bowl was popular back in 2007, the only one laughing will be CEO Roger Eaton to the bank.
- Loved "South Park"'s 200th episode on Wednesday. As a longtime viewer of the show and someone who has seen pretty much all of the episodes, it was great seeing Trey Parker and Matt Stone bring back some favorite characters and subplots like Jennifer Lopez/Mitch Connor, Rob Reiner, Tom Cruise, Mecha-Streisand, the radical ginger kids, the Super Best Friends (with Muhammad being censored this time), who is Cartman's father and more. It was also probably one of the show's best episode since "Imaginationland." Let's hope this plot continues on for a part two episode next week.
(Update: According tothis site, there will be a part two to this episode titled "201." And for a second there, I thought there wasn't going to be a part two since there was no sign there would be when the episode was over)
- I am so jealous of New York Jets fans right now. I can't even muster 1/12th of the excitement I get for having Lovie Smith as the head coach of my Bears that they must be having with having Rex Ryan as their coach.
- If there was any evidence that Tim Tebow is lying of his virginity, then this is it. I mean, this guy wasn't even a starter, and he still was wanted by the ladies.
- Was watching "Borat" on Friday, and I've got to say that I can't believe I forgot how ridiculously funny it is. Definitely my pick for the decade's funniest movie.
- Did anybody else watch Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" in theaters and, at one point, think to themselves "Am I on acid"?
And...that'll do it. More random thoughts to come next Monday! Until then, I hope you enjoy this new installment of the uncreatively titled "Zep-tastic Song of the Week." Now, most of us can agree that there untitled fourth album simply known as "Led Zeppellin IV" is probably the band's best as well as one of the best in hard rock history, right? From the beautiful "Stairway to Heaven" to the less talked about "Going to California," I can't name a lot of 45 minute album with so much great original content. Tonight's selection is from that album, as well as one of my favorites. From the harmonica playing in the beginning to the great guitar playing by Paige, it's simply a good listen-to for 7 minutes. It's the one, the only "When the Leeves Break":
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15

End of the Week: 04/11/10- 04/17/10
(this guy did not have a good week)
END OF THE WEEK:
Alright, what a week. We had some big volcano that not only managed to make its country even worse but also screwed up Europe's aviation business, a no-hitter and a 20-inning game in MLB on the same day, a recently unemployed late night talk show host getting a new gig, a guy that set Philadelphia sports fan progress back the same way the 2000 Source Awards set black people completely off the black progress board, and much more. The following are my picks for some of the week's best:
Sandwich of the Week: KFC's Double Down
It's the next big step in the sandwich evolution since McDonald's opened. On Monday, the brand very well known for its chicken introduced the Double Down, a sandwich made with no bread, but with two fried chicken breasts with strips of bacon, pepper jack and swish cheese, and something called the "Colonel sauce." Essentially, it's simple yet brilliant, instead of only one big piece of meat, have two but act it as bread. It also looks delicious, while can kill you. Now, I don't know about you, but the person who created it should be payed a fortune.
Video of the Week: "Green Men in LA Kings/Vancouver Canucks in NHL Playoff Game"
You know that the folks from FX really want to promote "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" to all of North America where they're using these spandex wearing men in an NHL game in Canada.
Stories of the Week:
- The Actual Story of the Week: Iceland's Mount Eyjafjallajokull Erupts
Okay, if anyone can pronounce the name of this island correctly five times in a row without stopping, I will send them $5 (precisely the amount it takes to buy a KFC double down). Seriously, though, this is not good. Not only did this make Iceland an even worse place to live in (as if the government declaring it bankrupt wasn't bad enough), but it also really screwed up Europe's aviation to the point that it's in crisis mode. Essentially, it is impossible to fly unless you're a military plane. This is, of course, bad news to travelers and to the nation of Poland as many of the world's top leaders won't be able to attend President Lech Kaczynski's burial tomorrow.
- The Tiger Wood Saga of '09 Memorial Story of the Week: Cherry Hills Man Charged For Assaulting/Vomiting on Cop and His Family
This one is definitely in big time consideration for the "Tiger Woods Saga of '09 Memorial Story of the Week" Hall of Fame (if there was one). So here's the details from what I've understood: so a policeman from or nearby Philadelphia took his two daughters, one sixteen and one eleven, to a Philadelphia Phillies game. One row behind from where they sat was this guy named Matthew Clemens and a friend of his who were yelling "vulgarities and obscene language." The policeman, who is identified as Capt. Michael Vangelo, and his family asked them to stop. Bad idea.
Clemens and his friends proceeded to then throw things and spit on the policeman and his daughters, including the 11 year old one to the point that they were ejected. This is where the legend of Matthew Clemens begins. As they were ejected, Clemens then proceeds to projectile vomit all over Vangelo and his daughters and hitting the officer to the point that he was bleeding. Other fans tried to stop him by jumping all over him, but even then Clemens just vomited all over them. And to think Philly sports fans were only 11 steps away from "getting there" in the Philly Sports Fan Progress Chart (see link on top). Think that's terrible? Read this first hand account on Deadspin from a guy who was there, and it sounds even worse!
My goodness. I really have nothing to add, other than just a big, loud "HOLY S@&%!" Since it appears that this incident did take place, I hope that he gets punished as the idiot he is. I mean, wow.
Person of the Week: Conan O'Brien/TBS
for going into partnership by having O'Brien return to TV this November on this longtime cable network for a four nights a week late night talk show. I mentioned this earlier in the week, but I'll say it again: this is a great move by both. While O'Brien could've had better choices like FX, HBO, Comedy Central or Adult Swim, it means going back into television to a channel that will give him complete control of his show without the ratings pressure that would have come if he was, say, on FOX. As for TBS, they just gotten one of the last twenty year's best late night talk show hosts under contract to what could be their most successful show in years and maybe the highest rated cable late night program once it launches. Plus, they will also have something to promote constantly during the MLB playoffs in October and maybe four-five hours of programming to fill a day. Also, it's a win for Conan fans because they finally get their favorite redhead on the airwaves again! And, at the end of the day, that's the most important thing out of all of this.
And that's the way it is! I would like to thank those involved in the events that made it to this week's column for making this possible. I would also like to thank you, the reader, for showing up this week in big numbers to read everything from the Masters live blog to this column. Without you, this wouldn't be possible. So, I hope thank you for that, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend.
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15

Random Thoughts: 04/05/10- 04/12/10
RANDOM THOUGHTS:
Okay, I know it's late. I know that I'm being pretty unprofessional with this long delay. And I know you'll be even madder to the fact that this week's 'Thoughts' are smaller than last year. But before you criticize me, just remember: last time I checked, this was my blog.
Now then, the following are my delayed thoughts from Monday, April 5th to Monday, April 12th:
- Congratulations to Conan O'Brien. Now that he has a show for TBS coming out in November, he will win this year's "Frank TV" Memorial Most Overplayed Promo During the MLB Playoffs Award! But seriously, I think it's a good move on both parts. TBS finally has a highly profiled star and show in their company that isn't Seth MacFarlane and his "Family Guy" reruns, while Conan will have a show without the ratings pressure and that isn't controlled by people other than him.
- Three weeks ago, I didn't know who Broken Bells was. Now, I'm a big fan of their music and their debut album. Highly recommend it.
- I would take Vinny Del Negro anyday. Sorry John Paxson.
- In an age where journalists should know better than to judge someone based on their press conferences and Twitter updates, how could columnists like Rick Reilly and Jay Marrioti actually use the "The good guy won" cliche for Phil Mickelson after he won the Masters. I mean, sure, he most likely stayed faithful to his wife unlike Tiger (though recent reports of an illegitimate child for Mickelson might disagree with that claim), you have that. But to use that claim is just dumb. It's like Russians saying that Stalin couldn't have been responsible for millions of civilian deaths because he always looked so nice while walking down in parades. Next time, think of a better way to describe him winning then acting like he cures cancer.
- I still don't understand why Augusta doesn't like to show more than four hours of coverage during the first two rounds. The notion that putting more hours on TV would disrespected the ticket holders is such a 20th Century thought.
And...there you have it. See you next Monday (or later if it's delayed again). Until then, here's this week's edition of the "Zep-tastic Song of the Week." Today, it's the song that became the title of a famous 1990s movie. I'm, of course, talking about "Dazed and Confused." Enjoy:
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15

The 2010 Masters Final Round LIVE! Blog
(Ed. note: Yes, I know that this is a Wednesday and that the final round was on Sunday, so this isn't really a "live" blog. But I did do this "live" over at MySpace on Sunday, so I'm still sticking with the title on this site.)
It's Masters Sundays, one of the best days of the sports calendar. We have an Englishmen at the top of the leaderboard. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are in contention. A fifty year old could win this! This can only mean one thing: a live blog.
It's Masters Sundays, one of the best days of the sports calendar. We have an Englishmen at the top of the leaderboard. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are in contention. A fifty year old could win this! This can only mean one thing: a live blog.
Alright, before I begin, here's how things are going to go down: from the beginning to end of CBS's network coverage of the final round, I'll be right here, bringing you updates as well as sharing my thoughts and opinions as the final moments of the tournament winds down. Feel bored and want to join in? Go right ahead. After all, I have 5+ hours to fill, and I need all the help that I can get.
Without further ado, let's get started. Now, since we won't have enough room for one full blog post, we're going to separate this into two parts. This is part one, which takes place between 12:40 p.m. and 3:40 p.m.:
12:40 p.m.- And we're off! You know, some people are watching in HD. Others, like Comcast and Cox cable subscribers, are watching this in 3-D. Me? I'm watching this on my fully functional, 15 year old Sony 28-inch standard definition TV. Joining me alongside is my esteemed colleague/father mj50. He'll be here to provide the Tiger hate. I have a good feeling about this!
12:50 p.m.- Here's a quick reminder of the leaderboard through three rounds while we're waiting:
1. Lee Westwood: -12
2. Phil Mickelson: -11
3. Tiger Woods: -8
4. K.J. Choi: -8
5. Fred Couples: -7
6. Ian Poulter: -6
6. Hunter Mahan: -6
6. Ricky Barnes: -6
9. Anthony Kim: -5
9. Y.E. Yang: -5
12:55 p.m.- Five minutes left!
12:59 p.m.- One minute left! The anticipation is killing me!
1:00 p.m.-
Here we go.
1:05 p.m.- And starting things off with our network coverage is probably the greatest golf announcer/ one-liner extraordinare Jim Nantz. Jim Nantz is calling his 25th Masters Sunday today, and he says he will continue to do it until he calls fifty. And now that he doesn't have that family of his, it appears that this can be achievable. Joining Jim are 50 other announcers throughout the course, with the leader analyst being 3 time Masters champion Nick Faldo. We're gonna keep an eye out on how many time he'll overreact to a shot. He likes doing that more than Illinois governors love prison (Note: that's my new stereotype I've created. Pass it on.)
1:06 p.m.- A nice start already, as we've just seen a replay of Nathan Green, who remains at +13 for the moment, making a hole-in-one at the 16th. This is going to be a good day.
1:08 p.m.- With none of the featured pairings teeing off right now, CBS is showing us 60 year old Tom Watson making a birdie putt at the second. Tom is trying to be the first person to win a green jacket hours after CBS showed a replay of him win the tournament in the seventies. And wouldn't THAT be something, huh?
1:10 p.m.- A few more things to mention before I continue:
- The final pairings are Mahan/Poulter (1:10 p.m.), Couples/Barnes (1:20 p.m.), Woods/Choi (1:30 p.m.), Westwood/Mickelson (1:40 p.m.)
- There aren't really fifty other announcers on the course for CBS. More like seven, not including the guys covering certain holes on Masters.com.
- All of the times are mentioning are in the Central standard time. But those of you that have read this site already probably know this, so you should be fine.
- I hate Phil Mickelson with a passion. So, if you see me write positive things when Phil hits a bad shot, you now know why.
1:14 p.m.- Okay, that eagle by Adam Scott was pretty epic. And look at that, we've seen a hole-in-one and one of the most epic eagles ever in a span of eight minutes. it just seems that only the Masters can do that, right?
1:20 p.m.- I wonder what PGA tour commissioner Tim Finchem would hate to see more: a fifty year old win the sport's biggest tournament, or a guy that took a self-imposed five month absence from the game to win the sport's biggest tournament?
1:30 p.m.- As of on cue, Tiger Woods starts the day off by hooking the shot to the left. He did the same thing last year. For those of you that are expecting Tiger to come from behind and win, don't bother. He has never won a major while trailing after 54 holes (3 rounds). The only way I see this happening is with him birdie-ing or eagle-ing the par five 5s and remaining better than +2 on all the other holes.
1:34 p.m.- Billy Payne sounds like a robot.
1:40 p.m.- Phil Mickelson starts off at the tee with a standing ovation by the crowd. I think we know now who the crowd is rooting for.
1:44 p.m.- Tiger watch: bogeys the first, falls to -7, now tied for fourth. He really needs to bounce back at the par five second.
1:48 p.m.- Lee Westwood, the current leader, hits it off a tree on his second shot after a hooked first shot. Geez, are they just begging Mickelson to get the Green Jacket (Note: for those of you that don't know, the Green Jacket is the prize you get for winning the Masters. So not only do they get a ton of money, they get a new suit as well).
1:50 p.m.- Quick update: Westwood bogeys, Mickelson pars, and Couples birdies. The leaderboard as of now:
Westwood and Mickelson: -11
Couples and Choi: -8
Woods: -7
(Note: I'll try to update you on the leaderboard as much as possible. Maybe once every twenty minutes? I'll see.)
2:00 p.m.- Things not going well right now for Tiger. He was unable to hit his third shot out of the bunker, and pars the second, continuing his bad start. Meanwhile, Choi birdies the second and moves to solo third at -9. Choi reminds me of last year's champion Angel Cabrera, an underrated International player who has played consistent throughout the tournament, but not many realize it until he's in it in the final round. Keep a big eye on it.
2:01 p.m.- Forgot to mention that Faldo was completly shocked after Woods's terrible bunker shot. This will be fun.
2:04 p.m.- Anyone else disappointed that that big roar by the crowd at the third hole was just a long par putt made by Couples?
2:07 p.m.- According to Ian Baker-Finch, the reason Tiger Woods is struggling right now is because of....his new wedges. Right.
2:09 p.m.- "What are the golfing gods doing?" "My goodness, if he loses the Masters, that will be talked about for years!" "This is the most ridiculous moment I have ever seen!" Those are quotes Faldo used to describe a little pine responsible of missing Mickelson's birdie putt. Did CBS pay him to be this overreactive of every little detail?
2:11 p.m.- Couples just birdies his second straight hole to advance to -9, two shots off the lead. Did I mention that he's fifty?
2:15 p.m.- You know what's the best thing about the Masters? The fact that there's only four minutes of commercials per hour. Makes the action feel more suspenseful, unlike whenever CBS went to commercial break after every timeout of the NCAA tournament. Definitely one of the best idea thought of by the Augusta golf club.
2:19 p.m.- Crap! I'm so preoccupied by mentioning Couples's age and Faldo's overreactions that I forgot to mention that Westwood is now the leader at -12 after birdie-ing the 2nd. Sorry about that.
2:27 p.m.- Sorry, Ian Baker Finch. As David Flaherty explained, it isn't Tiger's clubs that are responsible for today's struggles. It's his state of mind! By the way, he just bogeyed the fourth, going now to -6, six back of Westwood.
2:29 p.m.- I bet you that none of the kids on the Exxon Mobil commercials will grow up to be scientists.
2:30 p.m.- Since there are only three sponsors today, I'm going to give the best commercials honors to AT&T. I don't know what they're message is, but they are entertaining.
2:35 p.m.- Westwood bogeys the fourth while Mickelson pars. They are now both tied with the lead at -11. I'm taking a break. See you in fifteen minutes, everyone!
2:50 p.m.- Here's the video of the pine that drops right during Mickelson's 2nd hole birdie attempt that Nick Faldo went crazy over. Apparently, I'm not the only one that hates him, but God as well.
2:55 p.m.- A quick update of the leaderboard:
Lee Westwood (birdied 5th): -12
Phil Mickelson: -11
K.J. Choi (birdied 6th): -10
Fred Couples: -9
Anthony Kim (now in the picture): -7
Ian Poulter: -7
You'll notice that Tiger isn't in the top six right now. Well, you can thank his new clubs, state of mind, and pressure for that.
2:58 p.m.- Okay. Okay. Whoa. Whoaa. WHOAAAAA! Wow! And just like that, Tiger is back in it. Hit a long fairway shot into hole, giving him an eagle and improving his score to 7 under. And it's all on me for reverse-jinxing him. NO ONE DENIES THIS!
/Bill Simmons joke
3:04 p.m.- Switched to the White Sox/Twins game for a little while. Bottom of the eight, tied at 4 and runners at 1st and 2nd for Chicago. Put it this way: I'd be more shocked if they can get a run here than Tiger's eagle. That's how bad the team has played thus far into the season.
3:07 p.m.- Andruw Jones scored the go-ahead run in the 8th for the Sox. Jones is a pinch-hitter, so this makes this an ever bigger accomplishment since it took the team over 100 games to get a pinch-hit RBI last year. This can only mean two things: someone will miraculously come back to win the tournament. I can feel it!

3:10 p.m.- Lee Westwood just came within an inch of holing it from the six foot deep bunker at the seventh. Had he made that, we would've had a hole-in-one, two epic eagles, and a long bunker shot in what isn't even considered the best part of the final round!
3:14 p.m.- A quick note on my fascination with Faldo's overreactions: it isn't that I hate him (I actually think that he's the best golf analyst in the business), it's just that funny. And now back to the action...
3:16 p.m.- I'm very disappointed at Phil Mickelson today. No birdies, no bogeys, just pars, pars, pars. Come on, Phil, where's your patented double bogey that we usually see, huh?
3:21 p.m.- Quick update: Tiger birdies the 8th. He's -8 now, four shots back of Westwood. Choi birdies the 8th as well, improving him to -11, one shot back of Westwood. Couples makes a great 2nd shot in the 9th, and is a few feet away for a birdie to improve to -10, two shots back at Westwood. Did I mention that Lee Westwood is the current leader?
3:26 p.m.- Crap! Mickelson makes a nice 2nd at hole #8 to give him a nice birdie opportunity. From now on, I shall give Mickelson nothing but compliments. Worked last year when I did it in my mind.
3:29 p.m.- All right, Phil! -12 and tied for the lead! I feel good about him!
3:32 p.m.- It took a half hour to find, but I finally found it. Here's Tiger's eagle shot at the 7th. Pretty great, huh?
3:33 p.m.- Aw, cheer up, Phil! At least you didn't hit it any wider!
3:37 p.m.- Tiger update: After starting the day off with three bogeys, he has now birdied the 9th, his third straight hole with a birdie or better, to improve to 9 under par. And he did it with those new wedges, too! That should count as an extra birdie!
And that's gonna do it for now. Click here for part two.

End of the Week: 04/04/10- 04/10/10
END OF THE WEEK:
Before I begin, I would like to make a quick programming announcements. Tomorrow, I will be doing a live blog on the final round of the Masters. That's right, the Masters. You can mock me all you want, but with both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in contention and this being the biggest tournament in the sport, I have decided that this deserves the second live blog treatment in this site's history ( the first one being back in September with my Emmys blog. So come by tomorrow, and we can all do our best to not make Tiger-related sexual puns all during CBS's network coverage.
Until then, the following are my picks for some of the week's best. As usual, these are my picks and if you have anything I may have left out, you may say so in the comments section. Let's go:
Stories of the Week:
- The Actual Story of the Week: Polish President Lech Kaczynski and 96 Others Die in Plane Crash
The following is a list of some of the people that died early Saturday morning in this crash:
Polish President Lech Kaczynski
Mrs. Lech Kaczynski
Polish Army Chief-of-Staff
Polish Navy Chief Commander
Polish Olympic Commitee member
Polish National Bank President
Head of the Polish National Security Office
Deputy Polish Parliament Speaker
Polish Army Chaplain
Two of the Presidents aides
At least three lawmakers
Head of Polish Arms and Forces
Relatives of those who were slain at the 1940-1941 Katyn Massacre
Polish Senators and members of Parliament
In all, there were 96 people that were killed on that thirty year old Polish aircraft. Tragic can't even begin to describe this. Not to mention how ironic it is, considering that this took place while going to commemorate and honor those who were killed in the Katyn massacre seventy years ago in then Soviet Russia, and how it is bad timing considering the May 3rd Constitution Holiday fast approaching. The plane, a supposedly top-notch (yet old) Polish military aircraft, was supposed to arrive at an airport at Smolensk, a few miles from the Katyn forests, when, reports say, was caught in a fog where they probably hit a few trees and fell down. As you might have expected, there were no survivors.
Though no one might never know what really happened (some people are already making conspiracy theories about it, mostly involving Russian involvement) and many questions will be asked about it (like why were are these top officials put in just that one plane, and not put in various others?), one thing is for sure: this is a dark days for the country of Poland. Their government and military is going to be chaotic and reformed pretty quickly, not to mentioned how this is probably their worst post-war tragedy ever. As a 1st Generation Polish-American with all of my adult family members either living in Poland or having recently immigrated in the last twenty years, today is really a sad day, with only the death of Pope John Paul II being the only time I have seen such a state of sadness and shock from around my family. Still, though, life must go on...
- The Tiger Woods Saga of '09 Memorial Story of the Week: Tiger Woods Returns to Golf
While the tragic plane death of Lech Kaczynski was certainly the most shocking, the one that people couldn't stop talking about was golfer/ "End of the Week" category titleholder Tiger Woods coming back to the game of golf, playing in the 2010 Masters. What will he do? How will he be play? How will the crowd react? (F.Y.I.- on the ground, it was great. On the air? Not so much.) Well, he eventually did begin play on Thursday, and he did pretty well, posting a personal 1st round best with a 68, and through Friday was placed third, two shots behind leaders Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Now we wait to see how he will finishes (Note: if you read my live blog tomorrow, you'll find out!).
Video of the Week: "Taiwanese Susan Boyle"
This, my readers, is Lin Yu Chun. This is Lin Yu Chun singing Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You." Looks like we have our new favorite 'Got Talent' singer. Wow.
Person of the Week: Tiger Woods
It just seemed that there wasn't a day this week without some Tiger related news story. From his press conference on Monday in which over 200 members of the media showed up to the news that he has also had an affair with his 21 year old neighbor whom he's known since she was 15, to the commercial with him listening to his zombie that not only sparked discussion but can be parodied thousands of ways (and it most certainly was) to his first three rounds of the Masters (which he currently stands at 3rd plae right now). But, then again, when you're one of the most talked about people in the world right now coming back to action, what do you expect from today's 24/7 news cycle?
And that's the way it is! Don't forget the Masters live blog tomorrow! Until then...
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15

Random Thoughts: Where I Discuss Butler, McNabb, The Ugliest Car Ever Made(03/29/10- 04/05/10)
RANDOM THOUGHTS:

One inch. That's how close Gordon Hayward's shots with both less than 10 seconds remaining and less than a second remaining could have gotten in to give the University of Butler the National Championship over Duke. That's how close we would have gotten to seeing the biggest victory by a Cinderella team since the '85 Villanova Wildcats and one of the biggest steps of progress to respectability among mid-major team ever. Its' how close we came to probably one of the greatest ahots and moments in the history of the NCAA. It's also how close we were going to have seen Hollywood movie companies scrambling to become the rights holder to the script of the movie based on the 2009-2010 Butler team (and believed me, that would've happened. I could almost picture it now, with someone like a Peter Berg directing, Edward Norton as coach Brad Stevens, Zac Efron as Hayward, a grown-up version of Luke from "Modern Family" as Matt Howard, some R&B artist with partial movie experience playing Sheldon Mack, Ethan Suplee or someone scary-looking Russian dude as Zoubek, and with some inspirational title like "Hoosier Dreams." Tell me that isn't a movie idea someone was going to work on).
Alas, it was not. Gordon Hayward missed both the jumper and the desperation three at the end, and the big bad, and very dispised Duke Blue Devils win their fourth National Championship in school history. It also means we have gone a year with the Lakers, the Yankees, and Duke winning a national championship, which kind of sucks for us non-chalk sports fans. Still, though, it was a terrific game to watch, and definitely the best championship game I've ever seen, even better than that Memphis/Kansas overtime game two years ago that went into overtime. And it was a terrific way to end of the most exciting tournaments (and most likely the last one with the 65 team format ever) of all time. And that's a pretty good legacy to leave if you're the players on the two teams. And who knows, maybe Butler will pull a "Rocky II" and win the whole thing next year.
And now, onto some more random thoughts. A little later than usual, which I apologize, but still fresh. The following were on my mind between Monday, March 29th and Monday, April 5th:
- What's with this massive number of websites going through massive layout changes? YouTube, MySpace, Deadspin, TV Squad, etc. have gone through many recent changes over the last year. Don't they know that people hate change!
- Name one person named Chad who isn't an a-hole. Go on, I'll wait.
- The Scion xB has to be the worst designed car in modern auto manufacturing history. It looks just like most first graders drawing of a car, with that boxy shaped exterior, the hood sticking out and those big, square windows drawn on it. In fact, that's probably how the designer of the car made it. He/she was probably on the brink of getting laid-off unless he made an idea for a car, then (in the last minute) found his/her son's car drawing when he was four, then desperately pitched it to Scion making up his/her presentation as it went on, most likely thinking that there was no hope they would buy into it, but they somehow did it. That has to be the reason.
- Have you noticed that during a church mass, when it's at its quietest, some child always starts to cry, or is it just me? (It's probably just me).
- This year's NCAA Tournament was probably the best I've ever seen. From beginning with Old Dominion beating Notre Dame by one, Robert Morris nearly beating Villanova and BYU beating Florida in 2OT, to end with Monday's championship game, there always seemed to be some close game coming down to the end each round. There were also plenty of upsets going on, which was great, too. It's too bad the NCAA is thinking about having this never happen again with their idea of expanding it to 96 teams for more money.
- Why does CPS (Chicago Public Schools) have Spring Break on the week before Easter? Most of the suburbs do it the week after, and it id better for people like Christians and Jews who don't have to worry about celebrating their big holiday while relaxing and planning a trip. If anything, they can start Spring Break on Good Friday, then continuing it the week after Easter.
- Chris Berman should be the most excited about the McNabb deal. He can now use that Kevin "Corn on the" Kolb or Kolb "Salad" line he's probably been dying to hear. (Also, what was up with that deal in the first place? I mean, why to a team that he will get a chance for revenge at you twice in a year? Not even the Packers dared to trade Brett Favre to the Vikings in 2008.)
And that should do it for now. More random thoughts to come next week. And now, we're going to leave off as expected with another "Zep-tastic" Song of the Week. Tonight's feature comes from their fourth album titled, well there's no title really, but people just call it Led Zeppelin IV. It came out as a single in 1971, and reached #15 in the US Billboard charts. It's also voted as one of the 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time by Rolling Stones magazine and regarded as one of the band's best. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you, "Black Dog":
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
BONUS!: Is there a better way to finish off this NCAA season then a video of some of Gus Johnson's announcing calls describing a dog humping a stuffed bear? Of course not. Here's a video of a dog humping a teddy bear with Gus Johnson "announcing" it, just 'cause. You deserve it for being such a loyal reader.

Wow.
(04/03) This, my friends, is Hot Chips "I Feel Better." After watching this video, you will never be the same again.
Here's my recap: so these four boy bands dudes are doing their boy band thing, when all of a sudden Bald Jeebus shows up out of nowhere, everyone scared out of their lives. So, being the attractive and macho boy bands they are, they challenge Blad Jeebus to a motherflippin' dance-off. Problem is, they challenge Bald Jeebus one-on-one, leading him to destroy him through some crazy "Clash of the Titans" type laser beam from the mouth. What follows next, is simply indescribable.
Prepare for 3:37 of awesomeness (or weirdness) like you've never felt before...

UPDATE (04/07): Damn you, Hot Chip! Not only did they just not allow access to the video on MySpace in the U.S. (though I really don't understand why), but they also disabled any type of embedding of it on every other site I've tried to. Oh well, here's the link to the video on YouTube:

Like I said, prepare to have your mouth break wide open. Emotions while watching it may vary, though.
If you have any opinions on today's post, or if you want to suggest anything to mj15 forhis next blog entry, e-mail him at: mj1599@aol.com. Your e-mail might be addressed on a future post.

End of the Week: 03/28/10- 04/03/10
END OF THE WEEK:
April is here! In my opinion, April ranks one of the best among the twelve month calendar. The weather is juuust right, you can go back to doing stuff outside, and it's one of the best months of the sports calendar. Think about it, in this four week span you have the MLB season kicking off, the Masters, the end of the NHL season/beginning of the NHL playoffs, the NFL draft, the end of the NBA season/beginning of the NBA playoffs, and the NCAA men's and women's basketball championships. That's all four of the major professional sports organizations, the second biggest championship game in college and golf's biggest events all in one month, which is quite a great combo. In fact, it ranks right next with October for best month in the sports calendar, period.
So besides the fact that tax day falls on this period and that T.S. Elliot calls it "the cruelest month" with all the showers and all, it's still a pretty great time of the calendar.
So let's kick things off with a good ol' fashion random thoughts, shall we? The following are my picks for the best moments of the past seven days:
Prank of the Week That I Know Of (on account of the fact that April Fools Day occured this week):
On 04/01, two anonymous pranksters sent a fake rumor to The Big Lead.com claiming that they have a story claiming that they know who NY Jets QB Mark Sanchez's new girlfriend was, who they picked at random as model Katarina Ivanovska, and how they saw the two together at a gym. The website replied back, asking them if this was an April Fools Joke and whether the model has pictures. The two pranksters then claimed back with honesty that was real and even sended a few pictures. In the end, the website believed their claim and posted the fake story on their site that day:
A few hours later, the New York Post heard of the fake story posted at The Big Lead. Seeing that the information seemed credible, they ended up reporting it at their website in the Page Six section:
So there you have it, a story that was made by two people looking to pull a April Fools Day prank ended up making it as far as one of the country's biggest newspaper. The Google changing it's name to Topeka prank was pretty good, too, but once you read the bottom of their announcement page, it was immediately foiled. This one lasted for a full day without anyone thinking it might be a hoax.
Stories of the Week:
- The Actual Story of the Week: The Apple iPad Releases on Saturday
It will cost a ton of money and it will have a few malfunctions like most 1.0 devices will, but it has the shiny Apple logo on it, so you know people will come out in flocks to buy it the first day, even if it is just an oversized iPod touch.
- The Tiger Woods Saga of '09 Memorial Story of the Week: Ricky Martin Announces He's Gay
To be fair, this shouldn't be called "coming out of the closet," if the closet was made of glass for years.
Controversy of the Week: The "V" Countdown Clock During Tuesday's Episode of "Lost"
Nice job, ABC. You really needed "V," a show you were looking to be the next "Lost" after the show ends in June, to have some good ratings in their first episode back since the five month hiatus you gave them. And what did you do? You decided to piss off one of the most loyal TV fanbases, some saying they will not watch "V" thanks to that stupid clock. And you needed that audience, ABC. Plus, with that countdown clock you stooped to something that only NBC would've done (and they did a few years back with their countdown clocks to the premiere of "American Gladiators" and "Lipstick Jungle"). I don't watch "Lost," but I would also be angry for that happening if one of my favorite shows did this. Nice job, indeed.

Video of the Week: "Chat Rouletter Funny Piano Impov 2"
I love this guy.
Person of the Week: Apple
for releasing another expensive product (the iPad if you haven't heard already) that has flown of the shelves on its first day, making them even more filthy rich. So let's see, they have a popular phone, a popular computer, a popular mp3 player and now a popular tablet. Plus they made a TV a few years back. All they need now is to make a car and they will control the country as we know it.
And that's the way it is! Enjoy your Easter Sunday, everyone!
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15

April Fools Pranks, Problems in the CC and Chat Roulette Improv (plus End of the Month)
(Google announcing it will change its name to Topeka is just one of the many pranks pulled online yesterday)
Can I just be the first to say that I'm glad April Fools Day is over? That's because I'm definitely glad April Fools Day is over. It's not that I think it's a stupid holiday. Especially all the pranks being pulled around the Internet. Hey, everybody, George Lucas is announcing that he will make a new "Star Wars" movie with Zac Snyder directing! (clicks on page) April Fools! Hahahaha, did you fall for it? Because it sure sounded real, didn't it!
(Note: Movieweb.com actually did that last year)
Look, I'm not saying that they should stop doing so. I'm just saying that there should be limitations. Thanks to the big amount of pranks on the Internet, I can't read any story on 04/01 without thinking if it was a joke or not, which king of grinds my gears. John Forsythe, who is supposedly a TV legend, died
today. But what if he died yesterday? Would anyone, even his family members, believed him?
Let's not forget how stupid it makes people look when they are fooled by it, like Jason McIntyre of the New York Post. Poor guy probably is still embarrassed by believing that Mark Sanchez rumor.
Anyways, on to my picks for the best moments from March...
END OF THE MONTH:
Meltdown of the Month: Abbortsford Heat Head Coach Jim Playfair (Ironic Name Isn't It)
What is it about the minor league's that brings out the craziest coaches? From beating a stick to pieces to screaming like a madman to even taking a stick of his own player, it definitely is a meltdown of epic proportions. Not crouching down "Platoon" style andthrowing a pitching equipment to home plate like a grenade good like this
guy, but it's still pretty good. If I were to rank this on a scale of Jim Caldwell to Earl Weaver, it would be a Phil Wellman.
Videos of the Month:
- The Funniest: "Christolph Waltz on His Role in 'Der Humpink'"
As some random commenter on YouTube said "This didn't make my day...This made MY LIFE." Also, a big congrats to Mr. Waltz. He won a well-deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar, and he also showed that he's one of the minority in Germany that has a sense of humor. That's 2 for 2 if you're counting at home.
- The Funnest: to Watch: "Chat Roulette Improv"
Not only is it good, but it gets bonus points for being the first of many more Chat Roulette related videos to come.
- Huh???: Lady Gaga's "Telephone"
Seems like a lot to show about someone not wanting to pick up a telephone. Seriously, though, can anyone make sense of this?
- Best Fake Movie Trailer: "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story"
Fake or not, this has to be nominated for Trailer of the Year, right?
"Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" from Aaron Paul
- The Most Awesome: Jon Stewart's "Conservative Libertarian" Sketch
One of "The Daily Show"'s best, and longest (nearly 15 minutes, uninterrupted).
The Daily Show With Jon StewartMon - Thurs 11p / 10c
| Daily Show Full Episodes | Political Humor | Health Care Reform |
The Hell is Wrong With This Guy: Solly Forrell
Jesus, dude! I know you don't support his views, but that doesn't mean it's okay to want to have him killed!
Stories of the Month:
- The Most Scandalous: The Catholic Church and the Abuse Scandals
I don't care if it was the Devil, gays, the media, or whatever reason people are trying to put blame on the news of the new cases of pedophile priests and the Pope keeping one of his priests in their church during his charges of molestation while he was Archbishop in Munich. It's still sickening and makes me kind of embarrassed to be involved in this type of religion.
- The Most Overblown: Boy Directs Air Traffic Control in JFK Airport
The boy was just playfully asked by his father to tell him directions. It's not like his parents left the room, with him in charge. Sometimes I just wonder if the media is just doing this to attract webpage views. After all, that's what Balloon Boy did.
- The One that Made Jessee James the Most Hated Man in America: Sandra Bullock and Jessee James Split
So...did Sandra Bullock have a good month, or a bad one?
- The Most Historic: Congress Passes Health Care Reform Bill
I think enough has been said by a lot of people. Now all that is left is watch and he what will be the aftermath of all of this.
Meme of the Month: Release the Kraken!
Considering the terrible reviews of "Clash of the Titans," this might be the only thing that will stand out from the movie.
Person of the Month: Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi
Say all you want, but to continue fighting to push a bill that most Americans and all of the Republican Party find unpopular, then to be able to get just enough votes to pass it is just astounding. Now that took some balls!
Runner-ups: Sandra Bullock, Tea Partiers.
And that's the way it was for the month of March. From the parody-full NCAA tournament, to the Oscars, to even Washington, there were a lot of good interesting moments. Now let's hope April will be just as good. And with Tiger Woods coming back to play The Masters, the iPad releasing, Easter and a lot more things to come, it shouldn't disappoint. So, enjoy your Good Friday, and have a good Easter weekend everyone!
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
