END OF THE WEEK:
Before I begin, I would like to make a quick programming announcements. Tomorrow, I will be doing a live blog on the final round of the Masters. That's right, the Masters. You can mock me all you want, but with both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson in contention and this being the biggest tournament in the sport, I have decided that this deserves the second live blog treatment in this site's history ( the first one being back in September with my Emmys blog. So come by tomorrow, and we can all do our best to not make Tiger-related sexual puns all during CBS's network coverage.
Until then, the following are my picks for some of the week's best. As usual, these are my picks and if you have anything I may have left out, you may say so in the comments section. Let's go:
Stories of the Week:
- The Actual Story of the Week: Polish President Lech Kaczynski and 96 Others Die in Plane Crash
The following is a list of some of the people that died early Saturday morning in this crash:
Polish President Lech Kaczynski
Mrs. Lech Kaczynski
Polish Army Chief-of-Staff
Polish Navy Chief Commander
Polish Olympic Commitee member
Polish National Bank President
Head of the Polish National Security Office
Deputy Polish Parliament Speaker
Polish Army Chaplain
Two of the Presidents aides
At least three lawmakers
Head of Polish Arms and Forces
Relatives of those who were slain at the 1940-1941 Katyn Massacre
Polish Senators and members of Parliament
In all, there were 96 people that were killed on that thirty year old Polish aircraft. Tragic can't even begin to describe this. Not to mention how ironic it is, considering that this took place while going to commemorate and honor those who were killed in the Katyn massacre seventy years ago in then Soviet Russia, and how it is bad timing considering the May 3rd Constitution Holiday fast approaching. The plane, a supposedly top-notch (yet old) Polish military aircraft, was supposed to arrive at an airport at Smolensk, a few miles from the Katyn forests, when, reports say, was caught in a fog where they probably hit a few trees and fell down. As you might have expected, there were no survivors.
Though no one might never know what really happened (some people are already making conspiracy theories about it, mostly involving Russian involvement) and many questions will be asked about it (like why were are these top officials put in just that one plane, and not put in various others?), one thing is for sure: this is a dark days for the country of Poland. Their government and military is going to be chaotic and reformed pretty quickly, not to mentioned how this is probably their worst post-war tragedy ever. As a 1st Generation Polish-American with all of my adult family members either living in Poland or having recently immigrated in the last twenty years, today is really a sad day, with only the death of Pope John Paul II being the only time I have seen such a state of sadness and shock from around my family. Still, though, life must go on...
- The Tiger Woods Saga of '09 Memorial Story of the Week: Tiger Woods Returns to Golf
While the tragic plane death of Lech Kaczynski was certainly the most shocking, the one that people couldn't stop talking about was golfer/ "End of the Week" category titleholder Tiger Woods coming back to the game of golf, playing in the 2010 Masters. What will he do? How will he be play? How will the crowd react? (F.Y.I.- on the ground, it was great. On the air? Not so much.) Well, he eventually did begin play on Thursday, and he did pretty well, posting a personal 1st round best with a 68, and through Friday was placed third, two shots behind leaders Lee Westwood and Ian Poulter. Now we wait to see how he will finishes (Note: if you read my live blog tomorrow, you'll find out!).
Video of the Week: "Taiwanese Susan Boyle"
This, my readers, is Lin Yu Chun. This is Lin Yu Chun singing Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You." Looks like we have our new favorite 'Got Talent' singer. Wow.
Person of the Week: Tiger Woods
It just seemed that there wasn't a day this week without some Tiger related news story. From his press conference on Monday in which over 200 members of the media showed up to the news that he has also had an affair with his 21 year old neighbor whom he's known since she was 15, to the commercial with him listening to his zombie that not only sparked discussion but can be parodied thousands of ways (and it most certainly was) to his first three rounds of the Masters (which he currently stands at 3rd plae right now). But, then again, when you're one of the most talked about people in the world right now coming back to action, what do you expect from today's 24/7 news cycle?
And that's the way it is! Don't forget the Masters live blog tomorrow! Until then...
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
