Random Thoughts: 04/25/11- 05/02/11

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

This is my fifth post of the week, the most posts that I've done in a single week for over nine months. If that doesn't give you an idea of how eventful of a week this has been than I don't know what is. Anyways, lots of things to get to tonight, with quite a few of them involving the shocking news yesterdays regarding the death of Osama Bin Laden. The following were on my mind between Monday, April 25th and Monday, May 2nd:

- To the people who are complaining about the United States going onto the streets and celebrating the death of Osama Bin Laden, as if it were hypocritical of this country to do since that's almost like what Muslims in the Middle East were doing on September 12th, 2001, let me remind you that the celebration that occured last night and early into this morning were (in fact) NOT the same. Those Muslim extremists were celebrating the death of thousands of innocent civilians, whereas the college students who rushed to the White House from George Washington university were celebrating that, after ten years and trillions of dollars spent, the country's biggest public enemy and mastermind behind the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil was finally assassinated and sent to hell where he will now be raped by 72 male virgins for eternity. Sure, there will be some people who will treat this like the American news media treated the terrorist training videos back in the mid-2000s, complete with the monkey bar climbing, but I think that a majority of Middle Easterners will see this the same way that we did. In other words, completely different situation. Besides, its not like we've had any great moral victories over the years that could compare to this news that broke around 10:30 p.m./ET last night. Can this nation feel good and act unified again without some sad natural or man-made disaster needing to be created to make it?

- So, I think its safe to say that Obama is going to get re-elected now, right? After all, what negative thing could the Republicans possibly say about Obama's speech last night and the fact that his risky mission ended up being a success? That he didn't do it quicker? Yes, because its not like George W. Bush struggled to have soldiers find Bin Laden. The best thing that they can do is to just praise him while also saying how close he was to screwing up the mission and having them rip him to pieces. Add that to the health care bill, the repealing of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the avoidance of a government shutdown last month, the pulling of combat troops out of Iraq, the avoidance of total interference with the situation in Libya and his speech following the Gabriel Giffords shooting and you have a guy who is a much better candidate to lead the nation in 2012 than all of the candidates on the Republican side, from Trump to Romney to even that token black guy Whats-his-name.

- How ironic is it that, after one of the most exciting starts to the playoffs in the recent memory, the NBA is probably going to follow up with a lockout that has a better chance of lasting the full season.

-Cam Newton: bust, or greatest bust? Time will tell.

- Tyler Perry should write an autobiography. It could be called Tyler Perry by Tyler Perry. And then he should create a movie based on the book that will be called "Tyler Perry presents Tyler Perry by Tyler Perry, narrated and staring Tyler Perry as Tyler Perry." Maybe then he will get sucked from the world by his own asshole and stop the production of his crappy movies and TV shows for good.

- Whoever decided that having a ringtone of a baby laughing was a good idea should be beaten in the head a sledgehammer. And whoever decided that having a ringtone of a baby crying would be a good idea. Basically, anyone who has yet to realize that a ringtone of any baby doing or saying anything is annoying to everyone else.

- I can't wait to see how many YouTube videos will be posted within the first hour that photos of the Bin Laden corpse are released saying that they are false and that the death of the leader of al-Qaeda was just another conspiracy from the U.S. government, like 9/11.

- Oh, "South Park"! How glad am I to see that you've yet to forget how to make outrageous hilarious again!

-And now, to once again wrap up this week's RT post, here's the tenth installment of the early- 2011 NBC Thursday Night Comedies Power Ranking for the episodes that ran on April 28th:
1. "The Office"- "Michael Says Goodbye" (40 points)
Its an end of an era on one of TV's most beloved comedies, and it sure did find a way to finish it in style. While the minor plot of Andy and D'angelo did stink, the parts of the episode that truly mattered a.k.a. the ones involving Michael Scott on the last day in Scranton were perfect, in that they all featured a great mix of laughter and heart. I especially loved Michael's final goodbyes to each of the members of the office, from the short ones with Ryan and Toby to the more extensive ones like with Dwight, mostly because it gave us a nice final understanding of Michael's relationship with all of them. In all, I'd say that this was not only the best episode of the season, but the best episode that this show has had since the Jim and Pam wedding episode. And now, all that's left to do is to watch this new, experimental "The Office 2.0" (as I like to call it) at work.
2 (tie). "Community"- "Applied Anthropology and Culinary Arts" (25 points)
While this episode could not possibly match up with last week's clip show parody, I found it to be one of the season's better non-themed episodes. Gillian Jacobs and Ken Jeong each had one of their best performances this year, and I found it to be a somewhat satisfying conclusion to the Shirley pregnancy storyline (by which I mean that I'm glad Chang wasn't the father). What more can you say?
2 (tie). "Parks and Recreations"- "Jerry's Painting" (25 points)
It was one of those episodes this season that started off slow, but once it kept on rolling it got much better and more hilarious ("Indianapolis" would be another example of this for me). Adam Scott was probably the funniest that his character, Ben, has ever been while the story with Leslie trying to save Jerry's painting was really funny, especially when Leslie appeared on "Ya Heard? With Perd" to defend the painting only to end up getting her message completely twisted by porn actress Linda Maxxx.
3. "30 Rock"- "Everything Sunny All the Time Always" (20 points)
Ehh. That's all I'm going to say about this episode. Overall, I thought the Margaret Cho cameo as Kim Jong Il was great, and the whole "Amy gets captured in North Korea" plot was good altogether, but the B and C plots with Liz and Tracy were a big underwhelming. So, yeah...ehhh.

The new total tally:
1. "Parks and Recreations": 355 points
2. "Community": 320 points
3. "The Office": 285 points
4. "30 Rock": 265 points

And now, a quick update of how these next three weeks, the final ones with original episodes from the four shows until September, will play out. Next week (05/05) will be business as usual, with me ranking all four of the shows (even "Community," though Thursday's episode will only be part one of the two-part season finale). The next week (05/12), however, you will only see me rank three shows as "30 Rock" will have already wrapped up their fifth season. And because "30 Rock" is probably going to finish the year in last place anyway, you don't have to worry about it losing its place in the standings during that week. After that? Nothing, at least until September, maybe October (depending on how NBC sets up their fall schedule). The 5/12 installment will be my last power rankings of the year, since there will only be two-shows that will air one-hour season finales on 5/19 ("The Office" and "Parks and Recreations"), with the official champion being announced on that same Random Thoughts post. And since "Community" is only 35 points away from "Parks and Recreations," I'd say that the title is still up for grabs.

And..that's going to do it. I think I will have April's "End of the Month" posted sometime later this week. Until then, enjoy the rest of your We Killed Osama Bin Laden Last Night Day!
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
