False Starts, Theo Epstein, and the Return of the TV Top Ten

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

The following were on my mind between Monday, October 10th and Thursday, October 13th:

- Has it ever worked for any football player when they pointing possession towards their team after a turnover even though they know it won't go to them?

- On Sunday, after the season finale of "Breaking Bad" (of which I gave my thoughts of on Monday), I spent the hour of that watching the newest episode of "Dexter." Man, was that a drop in quality! You know what it was like? It was like switching from a filet mignon to
a pastrami on rye. The pastrami on rye is still satisfying, don't get me wrong, but it will never be a filet mignon (not since 2008, that is).

- I have to admit, as a White Sox fan, even I'm interested in seeing how the Theo Epstein era plays out with the Cubs. The man helped the Red Sox into winning two World Series titles in '04 and '07, more than any other manager in the franchise did in the prior 86 years. In addition, he helped draft a good list of young players that would provide a good core in their franchise for years to come like Dustin Pedroia, Jacboy Ellsbury, Clay Buchholz, and Jonathan Papelbon. Will he become a baseball legend and help stop another one of baseball's notable curses? We shall see.

-While I found the Boston Globe's report on the state of the Red Sox at the time of their collapse fascinating, I'm not going to make a big deal out it as I'm 99% certain that what guys like Lester, Beckett and Lackey did in the clubhouse occurred not just during September, and that it would have remained hidden had they just kept winning.

- It was a rather pitiful sight to see Monday night when all my rowdy friends had no one to tell them where to go.

- Speaking of Monday night, as a Chicago Bears fan, I would like to apologize for my team's performance against the Lions that day, especially all those penalties and gruesome to watch drives like this one. In our defense, we never liked Kellen Davis and our pathetic offensive line either.

- It's back! The TV top ten, an occasional update on the rankings of my favorite TV shows at the present time, is back! Normally, I wouldn't bring it back after such a short hiatus (<2 months). But with so much fall shows set to premiere on top of the ones that already have, and many summer shows coming to an end during late August and now (like "Breaking Bad" Sunday night), I figure that now would be the best time. As always, I will start from the very bottom of the list and slowly move on to my reveal of which is number one:

10 (tie). "Curb Your Enthusiasm" (down from #4, position previously held by "The Simpsons")
10 (tie). "Suburgatory" (position previously held by "Falling Skies")
9. "Homeland" (position previously held by "The Soup")
8. "Boardwalk Empire" (position previously held by "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson")
7. "Archer" (position previously held by "Treme")
6. "Community" (position previously held by "Curb Your Enthusiasm")
5. "Louie" (down from #2, position previously held by "The Colbert Report")
4. "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" (position previously held by "The Daily Show")
3. "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart"/"The Colbert Report" (position previously held by "Game of Thrones")
2. "Parks and Recreations" (position previously held by "Louie")
1. "Breaking Bad" (still #1)

Up from Last List (August 2011): Everything on the list except for "Louie" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm."
Down from Last List (August 2011): "Louie," "Game of Thrones," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Treme," "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," "The Soup," "Falling Skies," "The Simpsons."
New From Last List (August 2011): "Parks and Recreations," "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," "Community," "Archer," "Boardwalk Empire," "Homeland," "American Dad," "Suburgatory."
Just Barely Missed List: "American Dad,""Fringe," "The Simpsons," "The New Girl."

Other Thoughts:
a.
As promised, I've decided to combine "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report" into one wonderful comedic power hour. Expect these two two make one great case to be #1 after another from now on.
b. If there's any one of you reading this that thought a show other than "Breaking Bad" would end up #1, then you obviously have not read the blog these past few weeks.
c. So, why was "Community," a show that I love so much, at such a low position as #6? Well, for one thing, it has only aired three episodes thus far, and none of them have been particularly great (though they have been entertaining). Second, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," a show that would normally rank below "Community" on the rankings, had arguably their best stretch of early season episodes to date, including "The Gang Goes to the Jersey Shore" (RUM HAM!) and "Frank's Pretty Woman." Third, "Louie," a show ranked slightly ahead, aired "New Jersey/Airport" and the instant classic "Duckling" during it's final three episodes of it's second season, and I found those better than the three that "Community" aired.
d. Why, yes, I did catch up on "Archer" during the summer? Why do you ask?
e. I had "Suburgatory" edge past "The New Girl" as my favorite new network show of the fall TV season, despite it airing two few episodes ("Homeland," obviously, was the best new fall show overall). Most of the reason why is because I enjoy Jane Levy's character more than Zooey Deschanel's character, and I see it as having more promise.
f. Once again, "Parks and Recreations" is voted by me as TV's best comedy. Let's hope the quality helps it stay that way.
g. As for the question of which show I think is the worst that I've seen in the past month and a half, I'm going to have to go in a tie with The CW's "H8R" and NBC's "Whitney." Luckily, though, one show has been cancelled already while another has had it's ratings fall drastically to the point that it looks certain to become the next "Outsourced," so it looks like the rest of America is starting to agree with me as well.
h. No, I have yet to watch "Sons of Anarchy"! Leave me alone!
i. Shows that you might expect on the next list (if they're good): "South Park," "The Walking Dead," "American Dad," "Fringe," "Dexter," Boss," "Chuck."

More random thoughts to come this Monday! Now enjoy yourself before I come back tomorrow with the NFL picks!
Sincerely,
