2009 NFL Predictions: Week 6- Jason Lives!

There have been few weeks where I finished a fall weekend disappointed by watching NFL football. Last week was one of the few. In one week, we saw six big blowouts, a game where a quarterback went 2-17, 23 yds., no TDs and and INT and still WON, a team unable to get one yard in three yards in the game's final minute, and both the Cowboys and Broncos winning. However, none of those were as bad as having myself as a Bears fan spend the bye week constantly hearing about the good things that former Bears did. Cedric Benson once again surprised everybody with another great game while Kyle Orton continues to play very effectively for Denver. While I personally have not lamented their departure, it sure does suck hearing other fanbases gloating about the poor moves my team's franchises have made which, at the time they did, felt like the right thing to do.

It was also a bad week for me as I continue to drop in win totals. Two weeks ago, I had 11 wins. Last week, I had 10 wins, and this week it was 8. However, it was still better than mj50, who finished the week with 7 wins. But, it's a new week, meaning it's time for new games to pick. The following NFL game picks are from mj50 and myself.

Let's begin (note: game times are based on the central time zone):

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Washington Redskins (-6.5): Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: Kansas City
Once again, another matchup between a bad Redskins teams and another bad team. The difference, though, is that at least that Kansas City gives efforts in their games. If it wasn't for Miles Austin's terrific breakout game, the Chiefs would have won their first game of the year. Also, the management situation in KC is more stable. And, yes, I do believe those will count toward the game. In conclusion, I'm picking the Chiefs in a close one, making the Jim Zorn-getting-fired-before-the-season-ends odds from 5-1 to 3-1.
mj50's pick: Kansas City

Houston Texans vs. Cincinnati Bengals (-5.5): Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: Houston
Ladies and gentleman: the cardiac Bengals! With wins with :18 seconds left, :11 seconds left and :07 seconds in overtime, they have had quite a relationship with close games. Plus, this has made Carson Palmer really look like his 2005 self. However, despite the 2-3 start, I'm still not convinced that they're done just yet. That offense is too good and that young defense is still too promising too fade from the picture just yet. Besides, it's hard for a team to win five straight. Especially if you were a cuple of plays away from being 1-3-1. Houston wins in an upset.
mj50's pick: Cincinnati

Cleveland Browns vs, Pittsburgh Steelers (-14): Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: Pittsburgh
Congratulations, Cleveland. You won your first game of the season (despite only scoring six points and your quarterback only completing 2 passes the entire game). As a reward, how about the Steelers, who are the defending champs, an offense that is probably the best one that isn't talked about much and Troy Polomalu back. Personally, I'd think it would be suicide to pick against Pittsburgh as, I believe, they will win BIG.
mj50's pick: Pittsburgh

Baltimore Ravens vs. Minnesota Vikings (-3): Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: Baltimore
In the first of five pretty good games to watch, we have the Vikings, who are undefeated, and the Ravens, who were two plays away from being undefeated. Truly the definition of a toss-up call. In the end, I chose the Ravens because Brett Fave has really not faced tough competition as a Viking and if there was a game where Brett Favre can have a bad performance, this would be it. Plus, a Ravens team this good can't possibly lose three straight, can they?
mj50's pick: Minnesota

St. Louis Rams vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (-9.5): Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: Jacksonville
The award for worst winless team, by far, goes to the Rams. They're so bad, the other team's offense doesn't even have to beatr them. THey just find a way to beat themsleves, whether by a Marc Bulger INT or a Stephen Jackson fumble, or whatever. Jacksonville's pretty mediocre, oo, but they're like the Patriots compared to St. Louis. In conclusion, I'm taking the Jaguars at home against this year's 2007 Dolphins.
mj50's pick: St. Louis

Carolina Panthers (-3) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: Carolina
Ummmmmmmmmm............ yeah. I think the way the Bucs have been playing lately speaks for itself.
mj50's pick: Carolina

New York Giants vs. New Orleans Saints (-3): Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: New York
A great game to watch. Too bad my local FOX affiliate is bringing me the Packers- Lions game. Why? (Thinking) I have no idea. While the Saints have been playing terrific lately, the Giants are just better than them across the board. Plus, they have been unbeatable on the road since they beat the Bears in November 2007. In a blowout (if you'd believe it), I'm taking the G-Men and Steve Smith as the best WR for the Gaints (they are like the Ravens RB situation of last year).
mj50's pick: New Orleans

Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers (-13.5): Sunday- 12:00 p.m.
mj15's pick: Green Bay
Now to the game that I will be watching on my local FOX affiliate (unfortunatly). Overall, it's a must win fro Green Bay. They can't possibly lose to the worst team in the NFC North without Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford. If they do... well, you can bet they'll have a tough time making the postseason. I'm taking the Packers.
mj50's pick: Green Bay

Arizona Cardinals vs. Seattle Seahawks (-3): Sunday- 3:05 p.m.
mj15's pick: Seattle
It's amazing how the performance of the Seahwks is when Matt hasselback is playing. When he was gone, the Seahawks lost three straight. Then, on the first game he comes back, Seattle wins 41-0. That, and the fact that Arizona has lost 3 of their last 4 games, are why I'm picking the Seahawks to win.
mj50's pick: Arizona

Philadelphia Eagles (-14) vs. Oakland Raiders: Sunday- 3:05 p.m.
mj15's pick: Philadelphia
The Raiders should be permanantly banned from viewing for anyone except Oakland and the city of whoever they play against. Their just terrible, and they don't even care anymore. I'm picking Philly to win... BIG.
mj50's pick: Philadelphia

Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets (-9.5): Sunday- 3:15 p.m.
mj15's pick: New York
You know, I'm kind of giving some props to Terrell Owens. The Bills are basically doing everything for him to make his biggest rant ever. And yet, he's still not saying anything... yet. Anyways, I don't expect the Rex Ryan Jets to lose three straight games. Especially to a team who gave up only six poins last week, and still lost. The Jets will go 4-2 easily.
mj50's pick: New York

Tennessee Titans vs. New England Patriots (-9): Sunday- 3:15 p.m.
mj15's pick: New England
I still don't get why most NFL analysts are still calling the Titans an okay team. They're 0-5 for a reason, folks. By the way, why haven't they still played Vince Young yet. The season is basically done for them, and h's still has a winning record as a starter. Anyways, the home-field advantage and the mismatch of Brady vs. the bad Titans passing defense is why I think the Patriots will win. However, I'm still currently holding a three-games losing streak picking in Patriots games, so I'm not necessarily sure about this pick.
mj50's pick: New England

Chicago Bears vs. Atlanta Falcons (-3): Sunday- 7:20 p.m.
mj15's pick: Chicago
You know that Febreze commercial with the mother telling her son to clean his smelly room and her son doesn't want to. So she ends up using Febreze to clean it and when his friends come, he's says he did it? Well, that's basically a quick summary of this year's Chicago Bears team, who if it wasn't for missed field goals in the Steelers and Seahawks game, could have easily been 1-3. But, they're 3-1 nonetheless and Jay Cutler is really living up to his expectations (even if it means Matt Forte's and the defense's production decreasing). Now, coming back from a needed bye, they face a tough challenge. They have to go on the road against the 3-1 Falcons where they had a heartbreaking loss that has affected they're seaon last year completly.
While the Falcons have only lost once at the Georgia Dome in the Matt Ryan era, I still see the Bears on top. The Falcons secondary is too beat up to beat Cutler and the Bears' passing game. Besides, you don't think that the players who suffered that heartbreaking lost last year won't want to bring revenge to the Falcons. So, in a close one, I see the Bears finding a way to go 4-1.
mj50's pick: Atlanta

Denver Broncos vs. San Diego Chargers (-3.5): Monday- 7:30 p.m.
mj15's pick: San Diego
I'm still going to ride this mini Denver- hate train again this week. Besides, the Chargers know that if they lose again, then they'll be three games back of the Broncos in the division and they will have enough care in them to win this one.
mj50's pick: Denver

RECAP
The Undertaker at WrestleMania "Lock of the Week":
Philadelphia over Oakland
The Boise State winning the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl "Upset of the Week":
Houston over Cincinnati
The "Arrested Development" vs. "The Office (US)" "I'm Not Sure" Pick:
Baltimore over Minnesota

And that's that! Come by next week for my week 6 recap and my picks for week 7. Until then, have another fantastic weekend of football, everyone.
Sincerely,
Your pal: mj15
